Masks & Privacy

Interesting times.  In our state, facial masks are mandated in all public areas.  Of course, our post/base requires them in the commissary and exchange.  Don’t even think about rolling down your window at the gates now, either.  Scan those IDs through the glass, everybody!

I don’t mind the masks and believe they’re better than no protection against spreading airborne illnesses (if worn correctly).  What makes me distrust government officials, though, was their changing positions on the public’s use of them.

So, an interesting article this week coincided with my evolving feelings about wearing masks in public.  I definitely support any measures we can take to fool facial recognition devices wherever they’re located.  We wear hats & sunglasses in many public places, and in all photos of my family used on social media.

Masks are common in public in Asian countries where people wear them often to protect themselves from air pollution, illness, and invasive governments.  I remember reading about the air quality before the Beijing Olympics.  Look at the photos of Hong Kong protestors wearing masks, using umbrellas, and makeup to distort the images.

If masks become more common in the US after the COVID pandemic, that suits me!  I just hope I’ll have an easier time finding cute fabric after the panic eases a little.
