“Surveillance Capitalism”

The problem with today’s surveillance by companies like Amazon and Google is not capitalism.  It’s their theft of our personal information and data.  Their business model is to collect and sell our data to their third-party service providers as well as “certain of your information to third party experts, advocates, and advisors.”  That little nugget was from the official privacy policy of Nerdwallet, a new ‘service’ that shares all your personal and financial information with anyone and everyone they choose.

H/T NewsRep. —–>  Geoffrey Fowler’s article in CTPost includes a must-watch video about Amazon’s Alexa and the collection of voice data.  Creepy, creepy, sooooo creepy.  I am just imagining the recordings Alexa saved of my in-laws yelling at her. You wouldn’t want to make a song out of those recordings!  At least not one that kids would hear.

So where do you have these listening devices placed in your home?  What will your devices record you and your guests doing and saying?  We all do and say things when we think we’re alone that we would not want recorded and shared with anyone else.  We discuss relationships, kids, work… Wait, work?  We’re taking about deployments, military trips, other service members, and  sometimes even more sensitive things.  Certainly this is an OPSEC issue in military homes.

What are you giving away for novelty and convenience?
