Websites that register members, accept donations, and other ways that take personal information put our security at risk if they are hacked. The most current headline regarding these hacks involved the FBI Academy Association’s websites. When this story was shared online, commenters mistakenly assumed the hack was an FBI website and that the hackers achieved a major score. They didn’t read the article closely enough, however, and missed the word ASSOCIATION.
How many associations have your PII in their databases? In the SOF community, I know my spouse has two memberships. In his specific MOS, he has two more. These associations are operated by retirees and other cyber non-professionals. How vulnerable are they to hacks? I have no idea.
If the names, addresses, and other personal information for FBI agents brings a high price on the dark web, imagine how much our enemies would pay for the names and locations of the Green Berets, Rangers, and MARSOC. I know these Soldiers don’t run from a fight, but most of them don’t live alone.
These breaches keep me awake at night. If you’re worried about your personal information being breached through your associations’ websites, contact them. Good luck.
