Have you looked at your credit card receipts? Your legal name- the name on your account- is printed on most of them. Watch this YouTube video to see how this can have some creepy results. If you imagine the worst, it’s not hard to realize that leaving those little slips of paper all over the place can have some privacy implications.
We bank with USAA and I contacted them about this concern. They agreed to send us new cards with just our first initial and last name. This was great!! I explained that we’re concerned with identity theft and privacy. They immediately offered to send them as requested. Please do this!! This was something I hadn’t been worried about as we collect all our receipts. But what about the merchant copies left behind? I’ll definitely keep a sharpie in my purse to mark out the names until the new cards arrive.
Every time I write a new post related to identity theft and having your real name out there, I have to link back to the post about the possibility of encountering some unhinged stranger who is triggered by you in some way. Not a good tipper? You probably don’t want your real name laying on the table for the entitled young wait staff to pick up.
