Doxing is not what I thought

While searching around the interwebs, I have learned a few new terms.  One can also learn them following current events.  This story comes out amid the hundreds of headlines about a new Supreme Court nominee.  To most, it seems unimportant, compared to the hanging lib/con balance on the highest Court in our country.

It seems that DOXING is now a tool for intimidating people who disagree with someone politically.  No longer is it a tool of the kids at 4Chan or 8Chan.  And if you think it’s just the politicians who are targeted, you’re wrong.  This is terrifying!  Hopefully, this staffer will face quick and serious consequences for stealing and releasing this protected information.

Military, law enforcement, court personnel, victims of stalking and identity theft, and others should have the option to protect their home addresses, phone numbers, and emails from public release.  Honestly, as a former educator, I can see reasons why everyone would want to keep their location and phone number private!  Sharing voter registration information was designed to allow political candidates to contact and campaign directly to voters.  However, anyone with a thumbdrive can receive a copy of all the data and use it for data broker websites.  Florida, our home state, allows voters and vehicle owners in these categories to exempt from the public release of their information. You should check your state’s laws about this rule.  It’s so important to us, it’s part of our retirement considerations for where we eventually move.  In our last state, I registered to vote not realizing that NC would release every bit of that information to the public, and it all ended up online in a few months.  Thankfully, FL let me register to vote since my we may retire there.  I met with a state legislator in another state where we own property and gave him the copy of the exemption form from FL.  He was interested in changing the law there, too.  For anyone interested in public safety, it is significant.
