When Mark Zuckerberg testified in Congress, his company and its credibility were on the line. News about the Cambridge Analytica breach of our data was exactly what prompted Representatives who want to regulate his corporation. Make no mistake, however he tried to talk around the problem, Facebook was responsible for their users’ personal information being sold and used by third parties. If you use Facebook, FB Messenger, and/or Instagram, those mysterious algorithms are designed to gather, analyze, and then USE your information to make money. The bottom line IS the bottom line.
Please give these companies more false information about you than legitimate data. Don’t allow them to create a true profile of you and your family.
I started an experiment in my FB account (open only in browsers, not the FB app) to OBFUSCATE my identity. First I opened my FB Settings and clicked the Ads link on the lower left side. This took some time, but I removed (click the X) all the items under My Interests and blocked all the advertisers in that section. Under Your Information, I turned off all the options in About You and removed the items under Your Categories. In the Ad Settings, I turned off all the options. I turned off all the items in Hide Ad Topics. Everything I could remove, disallow, or turn off, I did.
Once those settings were changed, every time a Sponsored post showed up in my timeline, I clicked on the three dots at the right side and selected Hide All Ads from this sponsor. When it asked why, I clicked the X to close it. You don’t have to give a reason. By the time I hid the first few, I stopped seeing Sponsored posts.
Obviously, I never click an ad on the right of my timeline, either. Those mostly come from companies my friends have liked in their FB activity.
I understand the positive ways military families use Facebook and appreciate the ability to keep connected. However, I will never trust this company, or any other with my personal information.
