Internet websites and their domain names are governed by the ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. A website’s domain must be unique (such as ourprivacymatters.org) in order for an internet browser to point to it correctly. When a person or business registers a domain, their information becomes public information. All of the owner’s registration information is published on a website at whois.com. If you own a domain, your information is publicly available- and will be accessed by search engines- on this site and others unless you pay your domain registering company to keep it private. Your registering company still has your information, but they don’t share it with the whois.com database.
During my process of removing our PII from websites, I’ve used whois.com to research the registration information for several of the most abusive sites. Of course, much of the information is old, misleading, or otherwise incorrect. However, if a site is abusive and you’ve tried to contact them based on the information on the site, you may be able to find their registering company and domain host company and file a complaint with them about the domain and website.
